As we have already mentioned, the weight of the aquarium is very important when choosing the aquarium stand.

You can buy ready made stands from specialized stores or you can build your own. The only thing to remeber is that the weight must be equally distributed.

The aquarium stand can have the same dimensions as the aquarium or even larger but the aquarium must not exceed the size of the stand, neither by length nor width.

On the stand you must place 10 to 15 mm waterproof plywood, depending on the size and weight of the aquarium and this must all be covered with an isolating material.

If you are handy and you have enough patience you can embed the tank and the whole stand in wood, so that only the front window can be seen.

This cover should be made out of glass to enable the light to pass trough it and should be cleaned regularly. For practical purposes you can also attach handles on the upper side to ease your work, and cut angles to allow pipes and electrical cables to pass through.

This type of stands is a balance between costs and astetics. With self assembly the cost is in the time spent assembling, rather the cost spent purchasing it. There are different models available, some of them have shelves included, others have small desktop units which make them ideal for offices.

Glass-only aquarium stands

You can find this stands in Oak, Black and Cherry finishes, matching the canopies and prints of the aquarium. It is considered to be a very attractive combination. Manufacturers offer curved and glossy wood.

Metal aquarium stands

These are cheapest available. They are firm, long lasting and portable plus can match any budget. If you are a real fish lover you are going to enjoy this stand because it can allow you to store more than just one fish tank. Although be careful as metal rusts in contact with water.
