Fish food
Now we have the aquarium set up and know what the rules of a good maintenance are. Next is the
food. What you feed them is also very important. In the past the fish hobbyist prepared their own fish food. Nowadays this is not necessary as you can find fish food in every pet store.
The quality of the food is very important; you don’t want your fish
to be eating junk food. You must provide your fish with all the nutrients they require, their diet is as
important as your own.
Types of fish food
There are three types of fish food available on the market. All you need do is figure out what
type is the best for your fish. Tropical fish can be fed with any of the following: live foods, frozen foods,
freeze dried food, flake, tablet, and pellet food.
Live foods
Live food is a real feast for your tropical fish. The food that you introduce in the tank must
be fresh and good. The main live foods given to tropical fish are:
Brine shrimp - provides good
roughage. Daphnia - is a good supplementary food, and can be fed every 7
days. Feeder goldfish - it can be given to Piranhas and
Lionfish. Worms - Black or white Insects
(Drosophila) - they can be used to stimulate spawning.
Frozen food
Frozen foods are very high in protein and fats. There are a lot of varieties of frozen food for
tropical fish: krill, plankton, squid, vegetable-based foods, other meat-based products. (Frozen foods are a very
good supplement for your fish.)
Freeze dried food
Freeze-dried foods have the advantage because they retain all the nutrients of live food. It is
not recommended to feed the fish only with freeze dried food because it can lack vitamins. So in order to have
healthy fish you have to mix the types of food.
Flake, tablet and pellet
food
This type of food is the most commonly used because it is inexpensive and it very well balanced
in nutrients. Flakes are very easy to use; they float on the surface of the water. Flakes can be the primary source
of food for tropical fish. If you have species of fish that don’t come to the
surface, you can use pellets for them.
Rules of feeding
Feeding the fish is not as simple as you think. You must pay attention not to overfeed the fish.
Nobody wants to have fat fish in their aquarium. Also it is very bad for the water, because uneaten food pollutes.
So try to give enough food that can be eaten in 2-5 minutes.
Try to vary the food, mixing flake food with frozen food. Most fish do well with a diet
consisting of dry flake food. Pay attention from where you purchase the live food, it must be of good quality so
that the fish do not catch any disease.
You should feed your fish two or three times a day, in small amounts. The timing is not
important. When feeding the fish you should take into consideration the dietary types for fish.
