Goldfish - Learn about the great Gold Fish

Goldfish are the most popuar fish to be found in domestic aquariums, they are a non-demanding fish, do not require a lot of space and can live for a long period of time taken care of (it is not uncommon for a gold fish to live over 10 years).

In order to ensure your goldfish has a good life you will need the following: a big enough aquarium, food, water filter, aerator, thermometer and other accessories such as plants, sand, shells, rocks.

If you choose a round-shaped tank (bowl) the best type of goldfish would be Oranda, Lion’s Head, Bubble Eye and Black Moor. Other types of gold fishes would feel more comfortable living in a larger square aquarium.

Goldfish should be fed at least twice a day and will normally eat all the food you gave them within in 5-10 minutes. If you still see food on the water’s surface after 10 minutes it means you have overfed them and you should reduce the amount you feed them next time. Left over food will pollute the water and infesting the water this way reducing the fish’s comfort and makes the cleaning process more difficult.

Ensure you feed your goldfish the correct type of food as not all species eat the same. ensure you follow the instructions given to ensure that you are providing the fish with necessary amount of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and proteins.

A water filter is not absolutely necessary for goldfish aquariums. If you simply remove half of the solied water abd replace it with clean water on a regular basis the fish will be happy. An aerator is also optional, goldfish are joyful and they swim a lot so the water’s circuit is being made naturally.

Plants on the other hand are compulsory not only for decorating purposes but they are also beneficial to the fish.  

When cleaning the whole tank, not just replacing half the water use only warm water and salt tp clean it, also remember only to introduce your fishes back to their home once the plants, rocks and other ornaments ahve been put back..

Make sure that the water you use is low on chlorine; you can even boil it or use special tablets in order to purify it (in case you boil it you need to make sure it has the appropriate temperature for your fishes before pouring it into the tank).

For better understanding of your fish’s behavior try to spend a couple of minutes a day in front of them, you will see that goldfish are very entertaining to the viewer, they are also considered to bring luck, we definitely recommend that every house has at least one bowl with 3 or 4 gold fish in them if they can’t afford a real aquarium.
