Oscar Fish
| |

This type of fish is part of the cichlids species, and has its origins in
the rivers of Venezuela and other rivers along the South American coast all the way to
Paraguay.
|
They come in a large variety of colors such as striped, black, red, and different combinations
of these colors. They are big fish; their length can reach 25-30 centimeters which is why you will need a large
aquarium in order to breed Oscar fish.
They need this much space not only to feel comfortable but in order for them to survive. Due to
their size Oscar fish are usually bred by fish specialists. They often serve as ornaments in public places.
At a first impression they strike you as calm fish as they tend to swim slowly but the truth is
that they can create real disasters in the aquarium, they are extremely aggressive and territorial, they will not
accept the presence of other fish in the same tank, and will feed on smaller fish if introduced to the water.
They eat anything that is small enough to fit in their mouth and in some cases have been trained
to eat from their owner’s hand.
Oscar fish are also aggressive to other Oscar fish, the only thing you will notice from
such a fight is water drops coming violently out of your tank and although this fight may look like a real war,
they don’t tend to hurt each other.
Ensure you don’t put your Oscar fish amongst other smaller fish in the same aquarium, As he will
eat them, any fish should be at least his size, and even in these circumstances he is likely to fight with
them.
Also, try not to introduce new fish to the fish tank after the Oscar fish has been introduced,
no matter their size. The Oscar fish is a “clever” fish and will adjust to the fish he already lives with, but he
will notice if he has to share his “home” with any new fish and he will attack them no matter of their size.
