Tropical fish are fish found in tropical environments and includes both freshwater and saltwater species. Usually fish hobbyists use the term tropical fish for freshwater fish. For saltwater fish the term marine fish is being used.

Tropical fish are popular because they are very brightly colored and come in different shapes and size. When choosing to have a tropical fish tank you must take into consideration fish’s needs.

Tropical fish need a warm temperature about 70 – 80F, while saltwater fish need 80 – 82F. Most people decide to have a tropical fish tank because:

  • They are easy to care for
  • They are brightly colored
  • They have an aesthetic role due to their colors
  • They are not expensive
  • They can be left alone at home.

Even if you decide on a tropical fish tank don’t think that you don’t have to study. You still have to do some research concerning their habitat, and what they need in order to survive. Tropical fish may die if they are submitted to environmental changes.

When you have a tropical fish tank it is important to know how to do the maintenance. Tropical fish need warmth, so you will need a heater. Water must be the same as in their natural habitat. That’s why you must have a filter (biological, mechanical or chemical).

What kind of tropical fish should you choose?

If you are a beginner you may ask yourself what kind of fish is appropriate for your tropical fish tank? When you buy a fish you must think at the following things:

Is he compatible with my other fish?

Is it an aggressive fish, peaceful fish or a solitary one?

What are his feeding requirements?

Will they adapt to your aquarium set up?
